Rahul Gandhi jailed for two years in defamation case

New Delhi: An Indian court has sentenced opposition leader and Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison after finding him guilty in a defamation case.

According to Indian media, a defamation case was heard against Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi in the session court of Surat, Gujarat. Rahul Gandhi appeared in the court.

The court found him guilty of defamation and sentenced him to jail for two years. The court has also granted him bail for 30 days, as a result of which he has avoided going to jail, while he can also appeal against the decision.
Addressing an election rally in the state of Karnataka in the 2019 general elections, Rahul Gandhi said why all thieves have the surname Modi.

His allusion was actually to fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi and former IPL chief Lalit Modi, involved in corruption cases. There was a lot of uproar over this statement and BJP MLA Purneesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul saying that this statement hurt the sentiments of the entire Modi community.

The Congress party has said in a statement that Rahul Gandhi will challenge the decision and win the case.
